Jackrabbit

Jackrabbits are nocturnal, feeding mainly from sunset to sunrise. During the day, they hide in shallow depressions called “forms” that may be covered with plants. In winter, jackrabbits may burrow in snowbanks, or lie in depressions with only their eyes, flattened ears, and backs visible above the snow.

Did you know that jackrabbits are not actually rabbits? They are hares! While hares are a lot like rabbits, they are born with fur and grow to be bigger. By comparison, baby rabbits are born naked, without fur. Jackrabbits also have longer hind legs and bigger ears than rabbits. Jackrabbits can grow as high as two feet tall, or about half the height of an elementary school kid!

There are five different species, or kinds, of jackrabbits. Two of these species are black-tailed jackrabbits and white-tailed jackrabbits.

The liar

Once upon a time (ժուկով-ժամանակով) there lived a king. This king announced (հայտարարեց) throughout the land:

“I will give half my kingdom (թագավորությանս կեսը) to the man who can tell a lie that I can agree that is a lie.”

shepherd (հովիվ) came and said, “My father has got a pipe (ծխամորճ). The pipe is very long and he can stir (խառնել) the stars with it».

“That’s possible,” answered the King. “My grandfather had a pipe. He used to (սովորություն ուներ) put one end of it in his mouth and stretch (ձգել) the other up to the sun to light it.”

The man went out scratching (քորելով) his head.

A tailor came and said, “I am sorry, O King, to have come so late. Wind (քամի), storm (փոթորիկ) and lightning (կայծակ) did not let me come early”. I was patching up the crack (ճեղք) of the sky.

“Oh, “I believe it is true” said the King, “but you haven’t patched it very well, for it rained a little again this morning.

This man also went away empty-handed (դատարկաձեռն).

A villager came in with a bag on his shoulder. “What do you want, my good man?” asked the King. “You owe (պարտք լինել) me a bag of gold. I have come for it.” “A bag of gold!” exclaimed (բացականչեց)the King astonished (զարմացած). “That s a lie (սուտ). I do not owe you anything.”

“All right. It is a lie. Then give me half your kingdom.”

“No, no. You’re quite right (Դուք միանգամայն ճիշտ եք). It’s not a lie,” the king tried to correct (ուղղել) himself.

The Christmas tree

Once upon a time there was a little fir tree in a forest in Norway. It was a very small tree and it did not grow. The other trees near it were so high and had such big branches that the poor little fir tree could not grow into a big high tree. There were oak trees, pine trees, and birches around the little fir tree. They were all very useful to people. But the little tree was not useful to anybody and it became very sad. One day the fir tree asked the other trees, “Do you know how a small fir tree could be useful?” Some of the trees were too proud to answer such a little tree. But the birch tree was a kind tree and it said. “You could be a Christmas tree, but that is all.” “What is a Christmas tree?” asked the little tree. “I don’t know,” replied the birch tree, “but once a year, in winter, men come and look at all the little fir trees and choose the prettiest for a Christmas tree. They chop it down but I don’t know what they do with it.” “I could be useful to some people”, thought the little fir tree. It was happy now and waited for Christmas Day. At last that frosty winter day came. A boy with an axe walked through the forest. He stopped in front of the little fir tree, then he chopped it down and took it home. “This will be the Christmas tree,” he told his brothers. The next day the boys put it in a big room and decorated it with balloons, paper bells and golden balls. Their mother put some candles on the branches of the tree and lit them. “It’s the most beautiful Christmas tree!” cried one of the boys. All the family gathered around the tree. They joined hands and began to sing songs and dance. They all were happy. New year in Armenia

Like different nations in the world, Armenians also wait for the New Year celebration with impatience. New Year in Armenia is considered to be a family celebration with unique traditions and customs.

The celebration starts late at night on December 31 but according to the traditions, Armenians had three New Year holidays in the past: Amanor (March 21), Navasard (August 11) and the New Year on January 1.

Navasard

Navasard has had a unique way of celebration and played a special role in Armenian culture in ancient times. The word Navasard is composed of “nav” meaning new and “sard” meaning year in Armenian. It was celebrated from August 11 to September 9. The aim of Navasard was to worship and please Armenian main pagan gods. During the festivals, Armenians sang songs, performed dances with a festive mood. According to the legend, on this day pagan Gods came down to the Earth, swam in the Aratsani and then watched the celebration from the mountains. But when Armenians adopted Gregorian calendar, the official start of the year was recognized January 1.

The celebration of Navasard

From ancient times till now, New Year has been a special celebration for Armenians.

But why the New Year’s celebration is so special for them? First of all, it is a traditional symbol of new revelations. Armenians believe that the new year will give them new opportunities to start everything from a new point. Besides this, Armenians think that the New Year celebration is a great way to spend time with family, relatives and friends.

THE WIND AND THE SUN

The Wind and the Sun

The wind and the sun are having a disagreement.
“I am the most powerful!” says the wind.
“No, I am the most powerful!” says the sun.

“I can blow trees to the ground!” . “I can push ships across the ocean.

“Is that right?” replies the sun. “Well, I can melt all the snow on the mountains. I can dry up a lake.

Just then, they see a man walking along the road in his winter jacket .

“Let’s have a contest to see who is more powerful,” says the wind. “Whoever can remove the man’s jacket first wins.”

The sun agrees.
The wind goes first. He blows a gust of cold wind at the man.

The man shivers and zips up his jacket. “Brrr! What a cold and windy day!”

It starts to rain. The wind blows even harder and turns the rain into snow.

“Well look at that! It’s snowing!” says the man. “Snow wasn’t in the weather forecast today…”
He pulls his hood over his head.

The wind blows his strongest gust towards the man, but the man’s jacket stays on.
«Hmm. It’s a bit fresh today…” he says. “A winter storm must be coming…» He zips the jacket higher to cover his nose.

“Gah! This is impossible,” says the wind. He stops blowing.
“My turn!” says the sun.

First the sun shines enough to stop the snow. The man unzips his hood.

Then the sun pulls the clouds apart and gently shines down on the man. Suddenly, it is a beautiful spring day.

“Wow. The weather sure is strange around here!” says the man. He unzips his jacket.

The sun gently wiggles her fingers and increases the temperature.

“What strange weather. Now it feels like summer!” the man says as he begins to sweat. «Goodness me, it’s so hot!»

He removes his winter jacket. He lies down on the grass for a nap in the warm sun.

«I win!» says the sun, beaming.
